What a strange holiday this is, but where did it all begin?

Come with me on a short historical journey to discover the beginnings of this holiday. This traditional fall festival is perhaps one of the world’s oldest holidays with roots going back thousands of years. According to History.com, its origins date to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived throughout Europe but primarily in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Highland Scotland, and Northern France celebrated their new year beginning November 1. That was an important date because it marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the long dark days of winter and a time associated with death. They believed that at this time the lines between the living and the dead were blurred and the spirits of the dead walked the earth. They also believed that this was a time when the Druids, or priests, would make predictions about the future.

Huge bonfires were built for sacrifices of crops and animals to appease the Celtic gods. The people wore costumes of animal heads and skins and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. After the celebration they went home and relit their hearth fires from embers from the sacred bonfire to protect them from misfortunes during the coming winter.

During the 400 year occupation of the Romans beginning in 43 AD two Roman festivals were combined with the celebration of Samhain. The Romans observed Feralia, a day in late October when they honored the dead, and the celebration of Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The apple symbolized Pomona and it is believed this where the tradition of apples and bobbing for apples began.

When Christianity spread to the Celtic lands in the 800’s the holiday also incorporated All Saints Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs, on November 1. It is believed that Pope Boniface IV attempted to replace the festival of the dead with a related church sanctioned observance. This celebration was called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints Day) and the evening before, the night of Samhain, was called All-hallows Eve which eventually became Halloween.

Around 1000 AD the church designated November 2 as All Souls’ Day which honored all dead. It was celebrated with bonfires, parades, and costumes featuring angels, saints, and the devil.

When the Europeans came to this country they brought their Halloween traditions with them and when the Irish began immigrating in throngs during the Irish potato famine in the mid 1800’s they seemed to cement the traditions. The Irish, with strong ties to the Celts and their priests, the Druids, took the celebration one step further with the introduction of the jack-o-lantern.

The jack-o-lantern comes from an old Irish myth about a man named “Stingy Jack”. According to the tale, Jack tricked the devil into not claiming his soul when he died; but, when he eventually did die he was not allowed into heaven because he was considered an unsavory character. The devil, true to his word, did not claim Jack’s soul but would not allow him into hell. He sent him into the night armed with a single burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved out turnip and has been roaming the earth ever since. The Irish referred to this figure as “Jack of the Lantern” and then it was shortened to “Jack O’Lantern”.

In Ireland and Scotland people made their own versions of Jack’s lantern by carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes and put them in windows and doorways to keep away Stingy Jack and other evil spirits. In England, large beets were used. When these people came to America they soon found that pumpkins made the perfect jack-o-lantern.

I find it curious that every year when Halloween comes around some people don’t believe in celebrating it because they say it is the devil’s day. Actually, after reviewing the history of the day, nothing could be farther from the truth. It has always been a time of some religious significance and celebrating the harvest. True, it did not begin as a Christian holiday but it was a sacred observance to the people of the ancient world. Later it did take on Christian significance as a time to honor saints and those who have passed on.

It is interesting to note that the same themes of celebrating the harvest and honoring the dead are found around the world. It is a time of preparation for the long winter ahead and a time of parties, parades, and costumes. Today, we find ourselves at the crossroads between summer and winter, warmth and cold, plenty and famine, religious and secular. October 31 is an interesting blend of the ancient Celtic practices, Catholic, and Roman rituals which are both religious and festive.

Just as the Celts lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off roaming spirits, let us join the fun. Today it is a time for children, families, and neighborhoods to come together for some fun and craziness before we must face the long cold winter days of slogging through snow. So, in a few days when we see the neighborhood kids dressed as roaming goblins remember we are continuing an ancient tradition. Not just any red but flame red. Flame red suggests an intensity and mixture of colors ranging from yellows, through oranges, and eventually to true red.

Just as a flame encircles and consumes its subject, so October goes. It is the last month of warm weather in the mid-west and soon we will be faced with steel gray skies and bitter winter winds; but, for a brief moment we rejoice in the less frequent warm days and appreciate them even more. Before the limbs of the trees go bare nature adorns them in brilliant ball gowns. Like Cinderella, they don their gowns for a final farewell before retreating for a long winter’s sleep. The trees wave, giggle, and wink like young girls at the dance as the winds whistle through their rainbow leaves; and, a walk through the fallen leaves sounds like the rustling of taffeta skirts. This is nature at its most festive best.

The color yellow is seen everywhere providing a sunny backdrop to highlight the greens, reds, and oranges of the other trees. The golden hues spread a visual warmth across the land.

Orange is perhaps the most obvious color of October. It is found not only in the leaves of trees but is abundant in pumpkins, gourds, and Halloween decorations. lifts our spirits. Unlike other colors seen year round, orange seems to be reserved exclusively for October and the fall festivals.

At the far end of the color spectrum is the unique shade of red found in the sugar maples and the autumn fire bushes. It is a brilliant red which dots the landscape like a ruby necklace complimenting a young lady’s gown.

For now, the flame reds of October glisten in the sunlight, but soon the colors will deepen and fade to brown as the western winds strip the trees of their frocks leaving barren skins of sullen grey-brown bark. Let us abandon our daily indoor chores and rush outside to join the dance of nature before the party ends.

Posted in Archive, Notes from the Pond | Leave a comment

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Published October 12, 2010 | By Rick Lakin

<img data-attachment-id="50" data-permalink="http://dobbie.icrewdigital.com/bloom-where-you-are-planted/oct-2010-005/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?fit=3648%2C2736" data-orig-size="3648,2736" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.6","credit":"","camera":"COOLPIX S550","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1286365173","copyright":"","focal_length":"31.5","iso":"64","shutter_speed":"0.0073529411764706","title":""}" data-image-title="Oct. 2010 005" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?fit=300%2C225" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?fit=1024%2C768" class="size-medium wp-image-50" src="https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?resize=300%2C225" alt="" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?w=3648 3648w, https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?resize=1024%2C768 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?w=2000 2000w, https://i0.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/oct-2010-005.jpg?w=3000 3000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" data-recalc-dims="1" />
Bloom where you are planted.

While doing some fall clean-up I discovered a single petunia growing from between the cracks of my deck. It was proudly waving in the breeze as if to say, “Here I am world. Nothing can keep me down.”

It had spent the summer separated from its main vine and growing in unbelievable conditions with no dirt or food to feed its roots. It had braved the scorching hot sun and violent summer thunder storms but yet it had continued to thrive. In fact, it survived and bloomed even when other vines from the same plant had died off in the pot. Vines that had every advantage of the proper amount of sun, shade, soil, and substance to bloom profusely but; they withered and died.

This flower could stand as a metaphor for so many things. I couldn’t help but find comfort and strength in the fact that we can take a lesson from this flower and take what life gives us. Times are hard right now and being recent retirees in a difficult economy life is even a bit scary. However, when I begin to worry about the future I see this beautiful pink flower waving in the bright sunlight. Various Bible verses also come to mind and I always find strength and inspiration from nature. If God, the almighty creator, can equip it, a lowly flower, with the means to survive difficult conditions, then surely we are also equally equipped with the survival instinct.

I instantly thought of the words “bloom where you are planted” and did a quick internet search for the history of the phrase. Apparently no one knows for sure but I found several references attributing it to Mary Englebreit. I also found several references to various Bible verses and even an Afghan proverb. A quote from Gibran also popped up in which he said “be like a flower and turn your faces to the sun”.

No matter the odds, it is always within our nature to make the best of a difficult situation and continue to live our lives to the fullest. Whatever the origin, one thing is certain, it is a universal thought and the need to bloom where we are planted is instilled in us all. Somehow, the great creator will give us the tools to survive and thrive. My pink petunia told me so.

Posted in Archive, Notes from the Pond | 2 Comments

GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY

Published October 5, 2010 | By Rick Lakin

<img data-attachment-id="40" data-permalink="http://dobbie.icrewdigital.com/go-outside-and-play/john-317/" data-orig-file="https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?fit=3648%2C2736" data-orig-size="3648,2736" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.6","credit":"","camera":"COOLPIX S550","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1203467293","copyright":"","focal_length":"31.5","iso":"73","shutter_speed":"0.013422818791946","title":""}" data-image-title="Go Outside and Play" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?fit=300%2C225" data-large-file="https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?fit=1024%2C768" class="size-medium wp-image-40" src="https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?resize=300%2C225" alt="" srcset="https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?w=3648 3648w, https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?resize=300%2C225 300w, https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?resize=1024%2C768 1024w, https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?w=2000 2000w, https://i1.wp.com/dobbie.icrewdigital.com/files/2010/10/john-317.jpg?w=3000 3000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" data-recalc-dims="1" />
Even a short walk can clear the mind and improve the spirit.

I wrote an entry recently titled “Once A Teacher, Always A Teacher” and in it I also included some writing tips. At the end of each step I added the phrase, “go out and play”. I intended to write a follow up piece about the benefits of going outside and playing but it seems the Columbus Dispatch beat me to it. I opened the paper a few days after my blog entry to see this headline “Prescription for healthy kids: Go outside and play”.

It seems I am not the only one to recognize the benefits of being outside, in fact, there is a whole national movement to encourage kids to leave their computers, iPods, HDTVs, Xboxes, and other electronics and go outside for some fresh air and exercise. According to the Dispatch article and the Kaiser Family Foundation, today’s kids are spending an average of seven hours and 38 minutes a day, or more than 50 hours a week, watching TV, playing computer games, or on the computer. This is an astounding statistic. In response to this, a new national movement has begun called Leave No Child Inside.

In Ohio this movement is backed by Gov. Ted Strickland and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Leave No Child Inside coalition also held a rally in Columbus where they released a report showing how the change in lifestyle is creating more obesity, vitamin D deficiency, myopia and stress.

The national movement began in Cincinnati as a response to Richard Louv’s book Last Child in the Woods which addresses the growing disconnect between children and nature and a phenomenon he calls nature deficit disorder. Locally, the movement recognized Dr. Wendy Anderson-Willis, a pediatrician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital who actually gives prescriptions to play outside for at least an hour each day.

The Leave No Child Inside movement encourages outdoor activities such as bike riding, walking and going to a neighborhood playground or park. They say these activities benefit children physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. My personal research suggests outdoor play and activities also benefits children with attention deficit.

I am of the generation that remembers what the world was like before computers and, unlike many my age, I have fully embraced the modern age. Computers have improved our lives in so many ways I can’t imagine going back to “the good ole days”. But at what costs are we making these advances? I remember coming home from school and racing outside to play before dinner and homework. That time outside always seemed to clear my mind and refresh me before hitting the books again. For some reason I was always able to think clearer after time outside.

I worked part time while going to college and walked from my classes to my job. That walk always cleared my mind, gave me time to think about what I learned that day, and digest the material before entering a different world of working with customers. Even today a brisk walk is part of my routine, especially when faced with a problem or as a break to sort out my writings. I own two dogs and one of the reasons I chose to be a dog owner, besides my passion for rescuing dogs, is that it forces me to go for a walk twice a day. No matter the weather, we are there—the dogs briskly walking in front, tails proudly waving and noses sniffing the breezes. Even through last year’s horrendous winter of snow and ice, we continued our daily walks. A neighbor complimented me on my dedication but my reply was, “I have no choice. The dogs don’t understand if I say we aren’t going out today because the weather is too bad.” Hot sun, snow, sleet, these are all nature’s way of reminding us we are alive. When dressed appropriately, the elements should not be a deterrent to enjoying the out of doors.

As a kid we rode our bikes, played badminton and football or cowboys and Indians, had pogo stick contests, took hikes, explored nature in our own yard, went sledding, climbed trees, played on swing sets, or just sat under a tree and talked. We never thought of spending much time in the house, besides our mothers always shooed us out because we were under foot.

I have always thought the Native Americans had it right. They lived close to nature but also worshiped it. What they took from nature, they replaced. Land ownership was not a part of their world because no one could own Mother Nature. It was only when the white man came to this land and began establishing cities and factories that the balance of nature was upset. It took modern mankind only a couple hundred years to upset the harmony the Indians had established with the earth over many centuries. Today we are paying for this disconnect with obesity, high blood pressure, and diseases.

So, the next time you begin to stress out, leave the cell phones, computers, TVs, and all other forms of electronic entertainment behind and go outside and play. Feel the sun on your face and the wind at your back. See the brilliant array of colors in the various greens of the trees and grasses; or the reds, pinks, oranges, purples in the flowers that adorn porches and walks. Hear nature’s symphony as the birds and insects sing their melodies with the wind blowing through the trees providing the rhythm section. Take a deep breath and smell the perfume of abundant flowers or the musty fragrance of the forest floor. Taste the snowflakes on your tongue.

God, the greatest artist of all, has provided all this to restore our souls. So, go outside and play and feel really alive once again.

Posted in Archive, Notes from the Pond | Tagged Columbus Dispatch, Kaiser Family Foudation, Last Child in the Woods, Leave No Child Left Inside, Nationwide Children's Hospital, nature, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Richard Louv | Leave a comment

Link1 | Link2 | Link3

Copyright © 2017.
